AN EMOTIONAL Kyle Sandilands surprised listeners to he and co-host Jackie O’s KIIS 1065 radio show this morning, sharing the news of his father’s death just yesterday.
The 44-year-old radio host had been on a work trip to Paris and London over the past week while his Brisbane-based father, Peter, was battling the final stages of cancer.
“The doctors said he would probably pass away during that week I wasn’t going to be in the country. I went up, spoke to him — my brother and I had a nice visit. He was suffering — he had liver cancer and bowel cancer,” Sandilands told listeners.
“I said to him, ‘Don’t you die while I’m away, it’d ruin the trip!’ He was laughing, but he was suffering greatly.
“When I arrived home yesterday, I sent a text to a few friends — including Dad — saying, ‘I’m back bitches, I’m back in the country,’ — then he died 10 minutes later.”
Sandilands explained that his father had been repeatedly asking if his son had touched down back in Australia — it was only when Kyle’s stepmother relayed the text message that his father passed away.
”She said, ‘Yeah, he’s back,’ she read him the text, then he died,” said Sandilands, who in recent years had repaired what had been a difficult relationship with his father.
“It’s the regret of 10 years in the middle there when he was forcing [it], I was trying to pretend everything was alright, and it was a messy 10 years,” he said of their relationship.
He said that, after refusing to kiss his father from the age of 11, he gave him a final kiss goodbye when he last visited him.
“I love you, Dad, wherever you are. We’ll get [psychic medium] John Edwards on, and we’ll get dad back,” he joked.
“This is obviously a very sad time for Kyle and he and his family are in the thoughts of everyone at KIIS 1065 and ARN,” said ARN’s National Content Director Duncan Campbell in a statement this morning.
