SA floods: Ponde levee breaks sending floodwaters rushing into Murraylands

Dramatic video shows floodwaters pushing through an almost 50-year-old levee in South Australia, forcing residents to evacuate or risk being stranded.

The levee bank at Ponde, about 100km east of Adelaide, was split in two on Sunday, as floodwaters from the Murray River forced their way through the wall designed to protect the nearby community.

Residents were warned just after 11am to evacuate immediately or risk becoming isolated from power and critical supplies.

“There has been a levee breach near Ponde which may threaten your safety,” the SES said.

“This flooding is expected to cause your property to become isolated.”

Weidenhoper Rd, Skinner Rd, Reserve Parade, Kenny Rd and Ponde Landing Rd are all likely to be impacted.

Homes were sandbagged in an attempt to ward off the worst of rising floodwaters that crept into neighbouring towns throughout the afternoon.

A watch-and-act message was then issued at 4.30pm for the town of Murrawong, near Mypolonga.

The SES said “there is a risk of flooding for Murrawong due to a potential levee breach which may threaten your safety”.
