St Kilda beach stabbing: Teen dies after found at beach

June 2024 · 2 minute read

The teen killed in a stabbing at a popular Melbourne beach had just passed his drivers test before he suffered the fatal wound.

Hashim Mohamed had just earned his red P-plates with “zero mistakes” on his test, his driver’s school shared online just days before the incident.

The teenager has died after being found with a knife protruding from his body and multiple stab wounds.

The terrifying scenes played out on Sunday as beachgoers enjoyed the city’s warmest day of the year since January.

Emergency services were called to St Kilda beach just after 7.30pm following reports of people fighting.

An 18-year-old was found on the beach near Pier Road suffering from multiple stab wounds, with at least one of the knives used in the attack still protruded from his body, police allege.

The Tarneit teen was unresponsive and was rushed to the Alfred Hospital but died later.

Having spoken to witnesses, police believe the stabbing occurred after a fight involving about five to six males. Police believe them to be of African appearance.

Footage from the scene shows a large crowd surrounding the footpath as police provide first aid before paramedics arrived.

Witnesses allegedly saw men running north away from the scene.

“Being a hot night on the foreshore, there were a number of people around,” Homicide Squad Detective Acting Inspector Nigel L’Estrange told reporters.

A witness told the Herald Sun police were quick to swarm the area.

“There were cops everywhere. It was crazy,” he said.

One knife was recovered from the scene – though police believe there could be more.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are calling on witnesses to come forward with information.

CCTV and footage from witness mobile phones will be used as part of their investigation.
